Terlingua Calcite is a classic, hard-to-find fluorescent mineral. Pieces over 5 pounds are rare and nearly impossible to find. This is a big 7-pounder for sale with lots of bright calcite and lots of potential. We’re offering this piece “as found,” so you can have fun bringing out more of its true beauty. The piece is milky and bright. It has all the features you expect in Terlingua Calcite. We’re offering this piece at only $32 per pound, plus shipping, a bargain for a piece this size.
As-is, the piece shows multiple shades of pink, some purple, some yellow and some orange under long wave ultraviolet (u.v.) light. Under mid-wave, it shows nice shades of purple, yellow, and some orange. In short wave, it displays the classic blue fluorescence that Terlingua Calcite is known for. It has striking blue phosphorescence or afterglow that lasts for several seconds after being exposed to short or mid-wave u.v.
Since the piece is “as found,” it’s the same way it came from the mine. It has some matrix, some weathering and bruising, and some iron staining. Since we cleaned it only lightly, it also still has some dirt, and maybe a little bit of mold on it. Regardless of all that, it’s still a great piece as-is. But if you want to work on it, we recommend a good cleaning first. A good cleaning should brighten it up significantly. We sprayed it off with a hose and brushed it a little to knock off the dust and dirt from years of sitting out in the desert, but that’s it. After cleaning, you can decide if you want to do more.
If you are really adventurous, a great option for this big piece is to break it up. Milky pieces like this one usually have brighter, more saturated colors. The long wave color on this piece, however, is less saturated. That means it’s likely sun-faded. But in our experience, these big sun-faded pieces have great color inside. As is common with fluorescent minerals, getting to a fresh inside surface will likely reveal some awesome colors.
This piece measures approximately 7 x 4¾ x 4 inches and weighs 7 pounds, 4.5 ounces. At $32/pound, the price for this big 7-pounder is $233.00, plus shipping.
